danny boyle posters by teaganwhite danny boyle posters by teaganwhite

assignment for intro to typography.
we were given a text file of information on a fictional danny boyle film showing, and had to create a poster that effectively communicated the event with special attention to typographic hierarchy.
i created three, one for each of the films that would be shown (trainspotting, slumdog millionaire, & 28 days later), manipulating stills from each film with a style and color scheme appropriate to their respective moods. the text is really tiny on-screen because these were designed for print at 22"x17".

i'm really really proud of these, but unless you're fairly immersed in contemporary graphic design you might not understand why. which i suppose is alright.

I am giving you too much praise today...

But thank you.
My eyes are sick of cue-card posters with all the creativity of George Bush's speech writer.

Particularly fond of the half-tone dots - a tricky effect to pull off, and it looks incredibly in this context.

Negative space is great.

You actually made the poster look like the text is an integral part of the design and not a last-minute add-on.

There were some really unusual decisions you have made... But it works really fucking well.

Really nice set holistically.

Suitably impressed (for the 3rd time today).

Great stuff, truly.

All of them are great. First one is particularly amazing. Love the color scheme as well as the bitmap effect, fits well with the typo. Any reason you chose to make it landscape?

hm.. i guess when i was first experimenting with compositions, i was working off of still from trainspotting, and obviously movie stills are horizontal. so i guess it just stuck :]

Oh man this is gorgeous! It's a rare thing to find nice typography work in online galleries so this is a real treat. :)

I love your colour choices...they really reflect the mood of each film.

And bonus points for using one of the best shots from 28 Days Later. But then anyone who puts Christopher Eccleston's face in a beautiful piece of art gets bonus points from me, so I'm biased. ^^;

Are you a graphic design major?

ahaha, 28 days later is the only one of the three films i haven't seen. i had a hell of a time choosing an image, i guess that was a very lucky guess :]

in terms of finding good typography online -- you definitely need to check out behance.net and typographyserved.com if you haven't already.

& i'm an illustration major :]

It was a very lucky guess. xD

Oh, wow, those websites are excellent! Thank you so much for the recommendations!

I can't decide if I should major in graphic design or illustration. >.> It's a difficult choice. Best of luck at university!

it's a hard choice, between gd and illustration, yeah..
a lot of people flip-flop, and at least at my school they
make the decision even harder because illustration teachers
tend to discourage the use of typography and digital art,
and design teachers tend to discourage hand-rendered images.
i wish they made it easier to play the middle-ground,
because i think that both are strongest when combined.

That's exactly how I feel! I'd love to just double major in both but that's impossible. xP At this rate I'll probably major in one and minor in the other; I just need to decide on which.

It's good to know that you're an illustration major but are still getting to use typography and such. :) Keep up the awesome work!

its nice to see an artisticy type with sweet typographic skillz.

luv how the faces poke out through the negative space.

if i had to split hairs i would say i would like a little bit more leading on the "minnesota film arts presents" part.

really cool though i love all the texture and contrast. quite dynamic. it has that messy traditionally designed feel although i suspect it is not. love that.

cheers!

first assignment was to take individual letterforms and rotate them on an axis to create a new sort of symbol with an identity beyond the source letters. then after about a billion of those we had to take our best ones and create patterns from them, again keeping gestalt principles in mind. then we made a sort of informational design/poster that visually explained the process, from the letter to the completed pattern.

then we started this assignment, which began with your basic typographic heirarchy exercises (1st create a design with only one font size/weight/color, then another adding weight change, then another adding scale change), and then finally these posters (with like four weeks of revisions).

then we had a "type as image" assignment, which i created this for: [link] , but had to redo it because it was "too reliant on illustration." i'm not even going to get any further into this one, it pissed me off too much.

then we were given a text file of rob carter's "19 rules of typography" and had to create a booklet containing the rules.

and throughout the entire class, we were completely discouraged from doing anything remotely creative, in favor of just learning formal design strategies. which i understand the value in i guess, but it sucked.

well first we had to enlarge letter forms by hand 1.5x the size they were. then we had to arrange latter forms to go with pairs of design principals (like positive/negative space + repetition) we had to do about 20 of those and make a book out of them. Then we did 12 layouts in black and white that ranged from extremely simple to complex in the way of hierarchy. Now our final is to create an 8 page brochure on the designer of our choice. That one was definitely more fun. that was our first color project and i'm a sophomore XD
