It's a different genus than the ones you see every summer -- they live underground for 17 years and then all at once come up for a couple months in droves, breed, and die. Totally different life cycle from the annual ones!
i think the insects themselves are goooorgeous, but i can't help being really really freaked out by their shells.
it was 2008, the year i graduated high school, last time the 17 year cicadas came up. as a senior prank a bunch of people caught tons of cicadas and let them loose in the school, they were everywhere. guys would eat them in class to freak girls out. i wish i'd known at the time that they were 17 year old creatures, it makes you feel a lot more respect towards them!
i like their sound too, it reminds me of summers as a little kid. maybe you WILL step on bugs! once i was watching this little caterpillar walking across the sidewalk as i sat at a bus stop and then this man walked past and stepped on it (without realizing) and i watched my little friend shoot yellow oozy goo everywhere. saddest moment ever.
Yeah. They make me really calm, believe it or not. Crickets, I think, too. Yes, some crickets. Well, that's not a nice thought... XD And man, if I watched this yellow goo go everywhere, I'd probably be traumatized and never get over it. I was playing with some fireflies as a kid and I thought I "broke" it, like some flashy yellow ooze was on my hand or something. Also, it reminds me of this slug I saw. It had a cheetah pattern on it. Oh, irony!

Did you study Fine Arts or Visual Arts? couse I'm impressed with your works, the clean lines, pale colors, so noveau. How long you've been drawing? think you spent a lot of time to reach to this stage of expression. Could you help me with some tips and critics about my drawings? Just a look! it would help me so much!!
I majored in illustration at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, with an emphasis in fine art. I've been drawing forever, most dedicatedly since I was maybe 13. (I'm 22 now.) I'd love to give you advice if you have any specific questions for me about techniques or certain pieces, just let me know!
How do you outline this picture? I'm guessing the colours are watercolours, but how did you outline it oh so very neatly? from my experience, outlining watercolours using pencil turn out slobbish, but this picture of yours is stunningly clean and nice to look at! love it very much!
