Wonder why they say they come every 17 years? You certainly hear them every summer,I guess this year we'll see them too! YUCK!!

It's a different genus than the ones you see every summer -- they live underground for 17 years and then all at once come up for a couple months in droves, breed, and die. Totally different life cycle from the annual ones!

Yeah, I've saw the previous batch 17 years ago! Birds catching them in mid-air...they love them. :wow:

I hate when they buzz past your ear, seemingly flying so slow and the shells of themselves they leave behind!:x

They do have pretty wings and the one's I've seen are a nice iridescent green color! :-)

I have one as my avatar to gradually get used to looking at 'em.

i think the insects themselves are goooorgeous, but i can't help being really really freaked out by their shells.

it was 2008, the year i graduated high school, last time the 17 year cicadas came up. as a senior prank a bunch of people caught tons of cicadas and let them loose in the school, they were everywhere. guys would eat them in class to freak girls out.
i wish i'd known at the time that they were 17 year old creatures, it makes you feel a lot more respect towards them!

That must have been a fun day for the teachers (not). You're a brave one Teagan! If I were there and saw the infestation in the school, I'd still be in therapy!:giggle:

I'm probably gonna change this silly avatar to something more human.:-)

My fiancé is well aware of my deep love for your art and my out of control obsession with cicadas and for Christmas, I received this print on a society6 phone case from him :) I am very happy with it.
(I am also seriously considering getting a cicada tattoo...and commissioning you for the art. That would have to be in the future though.)
